He Qi

Tuesday night, Cari and I spent the evening at the opening gallery show for He Qi, a Chinese artist who has recently moved his family to the U.S. in hopes of further promoting a career as an artist and also allow his son the opportunity to be educated in the States. He Qi has been invited to Yale to be their artist-in-residence for the 2005-06 year and they'll later produce a book of his works. I believe he is a very up-and-coming new artists for the Christian art world and beyond.

His artwork is enamoring. Many of his final pieces appear as hand-woven silk tapestries, produced by the descendants of those who once wove the robes of Chinese emperors long ago. The tapestries are modeled after select paintings of He Qi's and reproduced with a process in which he is intimately involved in, to assure each piece glorifies his original.

It was an honor to meet him and hear a bit of his experiences as a Christian artist in communist China.

If you live in the Minneapolis area, his work is worth a visit to Premier Gallery downtown or visit He Qi's Web site at: http://www.heqiarts.com
