The Emerging church

I’ve been learning more about the ‘emerging church’ movement and while I still have my reservations and skepticisms, I’m finding that I’m frankly in agreement with a great deal of their points for differing themselves from evangelical Christianity (though they are still heavily rooted in it themselves).

Though it seems that A FEW who identify themselves as part of such tend to lean to the left politically, and have no trouble making it known, there seems to be a far greater majority who are not using this move of God as a excuse to bash the general populous of evangelical denominations or the 'religious-right.' Rather the push is for a greater connection to community within a congregation, but not necessarily through imposed cell groups who get together to go bowling, but a more missional, neighborhood-focused approach that is sometimes lacking in larger, mega-church settings.

After getting more involved with Source ministries, I’m seeing happen what has been in my heart to do for some time. A place where ‘church’ isn’t defined by a sanctuary on Sunday morning, rather ‘Church’ is represented as it is in the bible, as His people, making themselves available to their community.

I think what you're seeing is what is emerging - God seems to be teaching people that there is so much more to his life for us than being heavily involved in our local church. It doesn't have to be to the exclusion of the local church - rather, the inclusion of so much more. The emerging church seems to be a far more personalised approach. For some, this is to leave the structured church to seek and serve elsewhere, for others, it is to combine the modern experience with the postmodern experience. I think it is a matter of knowing what God is calling you to do in your community.
