Not quite 30-something

30 years of existence. Not bad so far. Life seems to get better with age.

Dream bigger

I can’t remember a time when I’ve been quite as double minded as I am right now. Last night, Cari and joined our friends at the Fallout for their Art and Faith Forum and our dear friend Kris Bargberg presented a few selected film works of hers and spoke about being a Christian filmmaker. One of her selections was a sneak preview of a new documentary she’s been working on for Over the Rhine (one of our all-time favorite bands known to man). Then talked about how she was making a move to L.A. to make in-roads into bigger projects.

All the time I kept thinking, what am I doing? Is my problem not seeking Him and His word more or not doing enough to pursue my dreams? It was as if God said to me, “Your desires to DO for me are not a threat to Me, seek Me and dream bigger.”

Pursue Him

A word I claimed as my own from the weekend, hit me deeply – especially after hearing the sermon from Saturday night and wrestling with some of the conflicting thoughts inside me. Though I’ve had many desires to ‘do’ things for the Lord, the one that has always stirred me most has been to learn and teach His word. I’ve found that over the last couple years or so, my business and desires to pursue filmmaking have drowned out my pursuit of Him and left me dull and senseless. It’s always been the learning and proclaiming of His word that has excited me and been the key reason for getting out of bed in the morning. I’ve neglected both my time to read His word and actively share it with those around me. It’s time for me to return to seeking His righteousness and not simply the things I can ‘do’ for Him.

The Emerging church

I’ve been learning more about the ‘emerging church’ movement and while I still have my reservations and skepticisms, I’m finding that I’m frankly in agreement with a great deal of their points for differing themselves from evangelical Christianity (though they are still heavily rooted in it themselves).

Though it seems that A FEW who identify themselves as part of such tend to lean to the left politically, and have no trouble making it known, there seems to be a far greater majority who are not using this move of God as a excuse to bash the general populous of evangelical denominations or the 'religious-right.' Rather the push is for a greater connection to community within a congregation, but not necessarily through imposed cell groups who get together to go bowling, but a more missional, neighborhood-focused approach that is sometimes lacking in larger, mega-church settings.

After getting more involved with Source ministries, I’m seeing happen what has been in my heart to do for some time. A place where ‘church’ isn’t defined by a sanctuary on Sunday morning, rather ‘Church’ is represented as it is in the bible, as His people, making themselves available to their community.

4 more years

Thank God. It’s over (for another few years).
